Breakthrough technological advances
in cataract surgery
Today, the vast majority of patients who
undergo cataract surgery receive monofocal
intraocular lenses, which require them to
use reading glasses in order to do the
things that they enjoy where they need close
vision.
Currently available to patients at the
Emerald Coast Eye Institute are the
Crystalens and ReSTOR intraocular lens,
advanced focusing implantable lenses that
substantially restore a
cataract patient's
ability to see clearly far away-at arms
length-and up close-without being dependent
on glasses or contact lenses.
As we age, our ability to continually change
focus from near to far begins to diminish as
the normally clear and flexible crystaline
lens in your eyes becomes rigid and hazy.
Over time a cataract may form. The
lens
hardens and becomes cloudy and may require
surgery to remove the cataract in order to
maintain quality of life.
Crystalens and ReSTOR lenses technically,
are accommodative intraocular lenses which
are used to replace the natural lens when it
has stiffened and limited the ability to
focus effectively. These lens are able to
restore your eye's natural focusing ability
by using a lens design that mimics the way
the natural lens flexes and focuses,
creating the ability to see things close up
and in the distance without using reading
glasses, bifocals, or trifocals.
Crystalens and ReSTOR lenses are implanted
in the identical manner as other intraocular
lenses. They can be implanted after the
removal of the crystaline lens using the
same technique as modern cataract surgery.
This means your surgery can performed on an
outpatient patient basis and that you can
resume your normal work and recreational
activities within a couple of days.
Dr. Poppell and
Dr. Alabata will be happy to
discuss this exciting technology with you
when you are ready for lens replacement
cataract surgery.
